The Kaspersky Personal Security Suite includes Kaspersky's well-regarded antivirus, the Kaspersky Anti-Hacker firewall, and Kaspersky Anti-Spam Personal. Unlike the leading suites, the three modules aren't integrated with each other; in fact, the antivirus and firewall even have separate icons in the system tray. Kaspersky Antivirus is the star of the suite, but we found the firewall and antispam modules only average.

Kaspersky Labs supplies antivirus protection at all levels, from individual to enterprise, and its high-end corporate products are often incorporated into larger solutions. The personal antivirus is certified for virus detection by Virus Bulletin, ICSA, and West Coast Labs, and for virus removal by West Coast Labs. It will scan files and e-mail for viruses on access, on demand, or on schedule (it performs a full scan once a week by default). You can set the on-access and on-demand scanning to a higher, more thorough level or to a lower but speedier level; however, most users won't need to change from the recommended settings.

By default Kaspersky AV deletes virus-infected files, after backing them up. Files that aren't known viruses but that the heuristic code analyzer deems suspicious go into quarantine. The antivirus checks for new definitions every 3 hours by default, and it can be configured to rescan quarantined items whenever definitions are updated. Unlike early versions, the current antivirus has a user interface that is sleek and easy to understand.

Kaspersky Anti-Hacker (KAH) protects against hack attacks and prevents unauthorized programs from making their own network or Internet connections. It doesn't offer to turn off Windows Firewall, so you'll have to do that yourself. It has no database of known good programs, which means you'll have to confirm every program once. In fact, it initially offered to block access attempts by four of its own modules! When a program tries to make a connection, KAH pops up a somewhat confusing confirmation that lets you allow or block the program once or always. When possible, it identifies the application type, for example "Web browser" or "Instant messaging."

Kaspersky Anti-Spam (KAS) uses Spamtest technologies developed by Ashmanov and Partners. It filters POP3, Exchange, or IMAP e-mail under Microsoft Outlook, and can filter POP3 mail for any client, but integrates with Outlook Express only. Those using other clients will have to define message rules based on the tags KAS inserts into subject lines. During setup it offers to import your Outlook or OE address book into a whitelist. You can easily add the sender of one message or a folderful into the whitelist or blacklist.

KAS subdivides unwanted mail into four categories: spam, probably spam, formal, and obscene. Formal refers to automatically generated messages like mail delivery failure reports. By default KAS directs the first three types into separate folders, but lets obscene mail into the in-box with a warning flag in the subject line. You can also mark a message as spam and optionally add it to a local spam database or submit it to Kaspersky as a sample. The spam database blocks exact duplicates of marked messages but has no other effect on spam filtering.
