As before, Norton AntiVirus 2008 remains purely a malware defence and hence offers protection against viruses, spyware and worms, whether they are browser- or email- or IM-borne. It now runs on XP or Vista only - if you have earlier Windows OS's, Norton AntiVirus 2008 isn't for you.

Norton AntiVirus 2008 Review

Having improved a lot last year in Symantec's flagship antivirus product, it makes sense we'd see more modest enhancements for this year's Norton AntiVirus 2008. While Norton AntiVirus 2008's antivirus test results compare favorably to our Editors' Choice winner Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7, it's the user experience that suffers in this release. The final size, a hefty 300MB, makes us wonder what's taking up all that extra space--Norton AntiVirus 2008 is roughly six times the file size as Kaspersky. Unlike Kaspersky, Norton AntiVirus 2008 is only available in a single-user license edition. Unlike Kaspersky, Symantec provides Norton users with little explanation of its features or settings, either in the configuration settings or on its technical support section. Also we don't like Norton's dependency on Internet Explorer to explain Help items or services provided by Symantec (windows pop up in IE even when Firefox is your default browser), or that fee-based services have once again crept into the technical support section. All of these things distract the user and weigh the product down in our minds. Your computer is safe with Norton AntiVirus, it's just, do you really need all that extra stuff installed as well? Norton AntiVirus 2007

Norton AntiVirus is back. With the release of Norton AntiVirus 2007, Symantec has both slimmed down the product and deepened its defenses by rewriting much of the code, making the 2007 version a valuable upgrade for existing users and worth a second look from new users and previously dissatisfied Norton AntiVirus customers. While you won't find flashy new features, such as wireless protection or full-featured firewalls, Norton AntiVirus 2007 does offer some of the best tools to protect your PC from today's active malware, including antispyware, and elements of a personal firewall. What is missing from Norton AntiVirus 2007 is tighter system performance and a more thorough online technical-support selection. Although Norton Antivirus has improved, this year we gaive our Editors' Choice to Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0

Norton AntiVirus 2006

With Norton AntiVirus 2006, Symantec finally gets serious about spyware and adware, computer malware problems that are becoming as insidious and pervasive as viruses were in the late 1990s. Norton AntiVirus 2006's enhanced protection against these new threats offers a big improvement over Norton AntiVirus 2005. That said, Norton is not as proactive as McAfee VirusScan 2006, which warns you before downloading suspected adware and spyware, a feature we'd like to see added to all antispyware apps some day. And we wish Symantec had left well enough alone and not cluttered the clean and highly functional interface of the previous edition. Despite these two things, Norton AntiVirus 2006 is a solid upgrade for current users, but new users still might want to look for faster, lighter performance found in other antivirus apps instead.
